Generation Y @ 1:56 PM

We are generation Y. As children, we valued the simple things. We camped out in our living rooms, building forts out of pillows and blankets. We only hopped on the colored tiles, because all the white tiles were hot lava. What was perceived as a box to many, was a secret fortress for us. However, as we matured, technology forced itself down our throats. Blinded by the sheer brilliance of industrial science, we lost sight of creativity and imagination, and became obsessed with staying up to date on cutting edge technology. Within a blink, our lives were altered forever. I see how society functions today and can’t help but fear what has become of us. SMS, a term for the abbreviations and slang most commonly used due to the necessary brevity of mobile phone text messaging, has been embraced as a language. We deem proper grammar and spelling unessential due to the fact that there is spell check. Intellectual, stimulating conversations have been replaced with what happened on Jersey Shore last night. Instead of girls valuing their bodies and respecting themselves, we have a show dedicated to pregnant 16 year olds. Why be educated and exercise our brains when there is Google? School, a resource of free education, is no longer taken advantage of. There, their, and they’re have somehow all become equivalent to “there”. Society has taken a drastic turn for the worse. Fortunately, as Generation Y, we still hold those childhood memories close. We lived the simple life and were content, if not happy. The one thing that separates us from Generation Z is the fact that we remember life before the takeoff of mass technology.
I worry what will become of Generation Z. Nevertheless, I’m intrigued to see what Generation Alpha [2010+] has in store for us.
